Silicon Carbide Bearings

Silicon carbide (SiC) has excellent thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and low thermal expansion. Silicon carbide is an excellent ceramic material for applications that require good corrosion and wear resistance. Silicon carbide is an ideal material for sealing rings and bearings. Silicon Carbide Bearings use pressureless silicon carbide (SiSiC) ceramic materials for use in extremely harsh environments and special locations.

Edgetech Industries, Advance Ceramics Division offers rings and bearings made of SiC and other SiC parts. Bearings made of other ceramic materials, such as ZrO2 and Si3N4, are also available.

Advantages of the Silicon Carbide Bearing

-Higher limit speed: Ceramics are lighter than steel, which will reduce the centrifugal force during operation, thereby increasing the limit speed at the same precision
-High precision applications: Ceramics have higher hardness and Young’s modulus than steel, and have smaller mechanical deformation under the same load, so they can be used in more precise applications
-Longer service life, up to 5 times longer than steel bearings: Ceramics are lighter than steel, and under the same load, the centrifugal force of the bearing is reduced, the raceway load is reduced, and because the friction coefficient of ceramics is smaller than that of steel, it can reduce the operating temperature rise, reduce wear, and extend the life of the raceway
-Can be used at higher temperatures: Ceramic materials can stably maintain their mechanical properties at high temperatures, Therefore, they can be used in high-temperature fields
– More suitable for temperature-changing occasions: Since the thermal expansion coefficient of ceramics is smaller than that of steel, the clearance of ceramic bearings is less affected by temperature changes than steel bearings, so they can be used in a wider range of temperature fluctuations
– Better anti-seizure and anti-seizure performance: This is because the thermal expansion coefficient of ceramics is smaller than that of steel, which helps to reduce thermal deformation and thus improve anti-seizure capabilities
– Can work without oil: Ceramics have self-lubricating properties and can also be lubricated by media, so they can be used in high vacuum occasions to prevent contamination of lubricating grease
– Resistant to acid, alkali, and salt corrosion, so they can be used in chemical corrosion occasions. This is also the area where ceramic ball bearings will have the largest market application in the future and need to be vigorously developed
– Can be used in magnetic environments: Ceramics are non-magnetic, and magnetic foreign matter or abrasive particles do not easily adhere to the groove, which can reduce abrasive wear
