The best high-temperature insulating ceramic material - Boron Nitride Ceramic

Hexagonal boron nitride ceramics have excellent high-temperature insulation properties. Its resistivity is 1014Ω•cm at 25℃ and can reach 103Ω•cm at 2000℃. The maximum volume resistivity of high-purity hexagonal boron nitride ceramics can reach 1016~1018Ω•cm. Even at a high temperature of 1000℃, it still has 104~106Ω•cm, which is the best high-temperature insulating material in ceramics.

Hexagonal boron nitride is a crystal composed of nitrogen and boron atoms and has important applications in many fields. However, it does not conduct electricity. This is because the crystal structure and electronic configuration of hexagonal boron nitride determine that it does not have the property of conducting electricity.

Although the structure of hexagonal boron nitride is similar to graphite, it is composed of many hexagonal sheets. However, the correlation structure between these thin sheets differs, resulting in graphite having delocalized large π bonds that can conduct electricity. At the same time, hexagonal boron nitride does not have such delocalized electrons.

Although it can be simply understood as: since both sides of the C-C bond are the same atoms, the electrons cannot be concentrated on one of the C atoms without destroying any crystal symmetry, so it is delocalized. But this explanation is incorrect.

The problem lies in the electronegativity of N. Since the electronegativity of N is very large, the electrons do not float between layers like graphite but are bound by N, so they cannot conduct electricity.

Boron nitride is a covalent compound. Boron atoms use SP2 hybridization to form covalent bonds with three nitrogen atoms, and the remaining P orbital is an empty orbital with no electrons. After the nitrogen atoms use SP2 hybridization to form covalent bonds with three boron atoms, the remaining P orbital has a pair of electrons. This electron distribution causes the electrons to be basically localized on nitrogen and cannot move freely. This electronic structure makes hexagonal boron nitride lack free electrons, so it cannot conduct electricity like metals such as copper, silver, gold, or graphite.

In summary, hexagonal boron nitride is non-conductive because of its specific crystal structure and electron distribution, which work together to limit the free movement of electrons and lead to a large energy gap. This non-conductive property has not prevented the wide application of hexagonal boron nitride in other fields.

Although hexagonal boron nitride is non-conductive, it has many other unique properties, such as high insulation and high thermal conductivity, which make it used as a heat management device in electronic circuits or as a cosmetic filler. These application areas usually do not rely on the conductivity of the material.

Boron nitride& #39;s excellent electrical insulation properties and stable chemical properties can also be used as an insulating material in electronic equipment. For example, it can be used to manufacture high-voltage capacitors, insulators, wires and cables, and other products to improve the electrical performance and reliability of the equipment.
